Panorama Brooklyn Paintings

Panorama of Brooklyn, Terminal Moraine. 32"X64" mixed media on paper
I used my winter holiday to work on some new paintings on paper. The subject matter of these paintings are "birds eye" views of Brooklyn circa 1776. In this work I glued four paper shopping bags together, creating a larger scale. In this picture I highlighted the natural terrain features that were important during the Battle of Long Island, August 1776. The landscape was painted with Brooklyn earth, charcoal, oil stick, paint and collage.  I labeled town and sites that were important during the battle and accented the dominate terrain feature- the terminal moraine, with tan soil. Today the area is known as the Park Slope neighborhood. The terminal moraine is a ridge of high ground created by debris left behind by the Wisconsin glacier 17,000 years ago. Below are some details of the painting.
The town of Flatlands.

The town of Bedford and the left wing of the American defencive line

Red Hook, Fort Defiance and the Gowanus area.

Red Hook lane and the Gowanus Mill ponds. The area today is the neighborhoods of Cobble Hill and Carol Gardens.
Here is another unfinished work on paper. I have taken this image from a map of the battle and used Photoshop to rotate the image into prospective. It created a kind of birds eye view of Brooklyn. The painting is soil and charcoal on paper shopping bags.
